In order to understand this song you have to know the story behind it. Isaac Slade, the lead singer, was in a predicament with his friend. his friend was addicted to drugs. Isaac tried to talk him out of it. He did not handle the topic well, though. He ended up ruining his relationship with his close friend and his friend never stopped doing drugs. The song says, "where did I go wrong, I lost a friend, somewhere in the bitterness." He is saying that the talk was very bitter. He says, "and I would have stayed up with you all night, had I known how to save a life." That says that if he would have stayed up with him if he knew that was the right thing to do. He says he did not know "how to save a life." This song is for people who have friends that are addicted to drugs and do not know how to treat it. It is saying to stay with him and help him every step of the way. As it says in the song, "Step one you say we need to talk, he walks you say sit down its just a talk," this is saying that you need to talk with the victim.
